The Professional Master of Education (Art and Design) (PME (Art and Design)) is a two-year, full-time Level 9 postgraduate professional teacher education programme offered jointly by MTU Crawford College of Art & Design and University College Cork, that leads to a professional qualification as post-primary teacher of Art and Design.

Entry Requirements
Candidates must have, as a minimum requirement, a H2.2 primary degree in a Fine Art or Design discipline(s) or equivalent (for example Degree + Masters that is recognised by the Teaching Council of Ireland as qualifying you to teach Art and Design at post-primary level upon registration with the Teaching Council. In some cases, equivalent qualifications that are recognised by the Teaching Council for the teaching of Art and Design may be considered. Please be advised the Teaching Council does not pre-assess qualifications for individuals who are applying for the PME Art & Design and it is up to applicants to self-assess their qualifications to ensure they meet the requirements for the PME Art & Design providers and the Teaching Council.

Interview
Eligible applicants will also be interviewed, which includes the viewing of a portfolio of extracts from your art, design, or craft portfolio and sketchbook. These extracts should come from your undergraduate studies (and if applicable, any other subsequent creative work) for review by the panel and contain:
Sketchbooks - showing research and conceptual sketches of your own work, representing the stages of your creative processes,
Observational Drawing
Work from your Degree Year - (if Degree is pending, work in progress will suffice). Examples of MA work or work since graduation can also be included, if applicable.
Further details of the portfolio requirements regarding quantity and format, will be sent out with the interview invitation.
As part of the interview, eligible applicants will also be required to complete a written task. This will be a response to a set question relating to art and design practice, process and educational contexts. This task will be provided to you on the day of the interview and is usually completed within one hour.
Interviews are expected to be held in March 2024 and April 2024
Garda Vetting
This programme requires applicants to undergo a Garda Vetting process. This requirement is due to the mandatory external placement element of the programme which will bring the applicant into contact with children or vulnerable adults and in which they will assume positions of trust. In the Republic of Ireland responsibility for the vetting of all personnel working in a full-time, part-time or in a voluntary capacity with children or vulnerable adults, lies with the Garda Central Vetting Unit (GCVU) which is located in Thurles. University College Cork (UCC), the co-ordinating institution of the joint award PME Art and Design, has engaged with the GCVU to develop liaison mechanisms which will aid the Garda Vetting process. Commencement of school placement and registration on the programme are subject to full compliance with the University’s policy, practice and requirements in respect of Garda Vetting.
