Ray Power, Potter

Ray Power works as a potter and manager for Castle Arch Pottery in Kilkenny. After his Leaving Cert, he went on to complete a degree in Ceramic Design at Crawford College of Art and Design in Cork. He later moved to Kilkenny and on completing a business course run by the Crafts Council, he set up his own workshop.

What were the main 'career decision' milestones in your life so far?

Taking a Postgraduate course - leading to Business course. Also, finding a suitable premesis to rent.

How did you go about getting your current job?

Setup on my own in 1992.

Describe a typical day?

Ray Power, Potter

From 9:00 to 5:00 I am involved in manufacturing, sending out orders, and dealing with customers in the shop. I do the accounts at home after hours.

What are the main tasks and responsibilities?

Management, Glazeing, Dispatching orders and doing the accounts.

What are the main challenges?

Meeting deadlines for orders.

What do you like most?

Having my own workshop in the Castle yard. Flexible hours, and selling what I make.

Chasing payments from customers.

What particular skills do you bring to your workplace?

Management, and an understanding of the marketplace in Giftware.

Art, Physics, Accountancy along with the compulsary ones.

Setting up "Made in Kilkenny" - a group of crafts people marketing themselves locally and nationally.
