Agricultural engineering is a specialised branch of engineering, concerned with the design, manufacture, modification and maintenance of equipment used in agriculture. This course provides students with education and training to work within the area of Agricultural Technology. The focus of this course is firmly on the provision of skilled technicians for the farm machinery industry in Ireland. Course content includes tractor engineering and workshop process, machinery operation, electrical and electronic technology, administration and management, engineering science and mathematics, engineering drawing and CAD and computer studies, project and industrial placement together with a high degree of personal and practical skills. Students will be taught a mix of technology, practical, academic, administrative and managerial modules which will prepare them to carry out complex diagnostics and repairs of modern machinery and to be receptive to future technological developments to take advantage of vacancies that will arise within the industry.

Agricultural mechanics are concerned with fault-finding, repair, overhaul and maintenance of farm tractors and farm machinery. These farm machines could include forage harvesters, balers, bale wrappers, mowers, combine harvesters, crop-sprayers, fertiliser distributors, diet feeders, tillage and slurry handling equipment.

Their skills overlap with those of other crafts within the motor family of crafts, therefore they are equipped to carry out some repair work on ATVs (All Terrain Vehicle– Quads), light and heavy commercial vehicles, earth moving equipment, forklift trucks and other vehicles. Besides the normal agricultural tractor and machinery garages, some large agricultural contracting firms employ their own agricultural mechanics. MTU is the only Technological University or Institute of Technology in the country which offers craft level apprenticeship courses in agricultural mechanics. Our facilities give apprentices a unique opportunity to experience the state-of-the-art technology currently being employed in the agricultural sector.

This full-time one-year programme is aimed at anyone interested in the agricultural and science sectors. It aims to equip students with knowledge of the evolving agri-science related industries. It also aims to inform students on up-to-date organic and renewable farming practices.

If you are interested in studying Agricultural Science but are not certain of which area to specialise in, you can select the ‘No Preference (NPF)’ option on your CAO form. Then, during your first year at UCD, you can choose your area of specialisation. Once you receive an offer on the Agricultural Science programme (DN250) you will be guaranteed a place in any of the 11 specialisations from second year.

This one-year course is designed to give students an introduction to Agriculture science and covers a variety of areas related to the study of animal science. Students will gain a fundamental understanding of content related to animal and agri-sciences. The course offers modules such as Animal Anatomy and Physiology, Biology and Laboratory Skills. Students will also have the option to study other modules within the science sector giving a good grounding for entry into a higher education science degree.

Agricultural Systems Technology is aimed at students who wish to learn how to build, develop, and manage technology for the agriculture sector. Students will gain a deep understanding of how to use technology in order to improve and enhance sustainability, efficiency and reliability in farming and food production. You will take classes in engineering, science, mathematics and data science. Upon completing the course, you will be uniquely equipped to build, develop and manage technologies such as computer systems, networks, data management and sensors, machinery systems and precision agriculture.
