This course is designed to prepare students to progress to 3rd Level Institutions to study Nursing, Midwifery, Social Care or other subjects in the healthcare field. The course also prepares students who wish to work in healthcare in a variety of settings such as nursing homes, community settings and hospitals. There are practical and academic components in this course including skills demonstrations, assignments, exams and project work.

The aim of this one year full time course is to provide the learner with the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, skill and competence to work under supervision in a variety of healthcare settings and / or to progress to further or higher education and training.

This course introduces the learner to the role of the nurse and provides an understanding of the knowledge and skills required to pursue a career in the nursing profession. Practical elements and work experience enable the learner to gain hands on experience and a real insight into the caring profession. Students gain employment within the health service working in Hospitals, Nursing Homes and Community Care Homes. Many students also progress to third level institutions to study nursing and midwifery.

The overall aim of the programme is to provide the learner with the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, skill and competence to work under supervision in a variety of healthcare settings and / or to progress to further or higher education and training.

Learners are offered a practical and theoretical introduction to a career in nursing. Learners complete work placement in a clinical/ward environment. Training is completed using simulation equipment to help learners understand how to care for patients. The programme gives learners a realistic insight into what the world of nursing entails and enhances learner's opportunities to get a place on a third-level college course. Many higher education colleges have reserved places on their courses for graduates of QQI Nursing Studies.

The purpose of this programme is to prepare the student for all aspects of nursing. The student is introduced to a wide variety of modules with a work placement element to the programme, which gives the student the opportunity and the experience of working in a setting of their choice under supervision.
