Sociology complements the study of English in unique ways: in assessing the development and organisation of societies and social institutions, beliefs and traditions, and cultural practices, Sociology illuminates, and is illuminated by the intellectual interests of English.

Students undertaking English and Spanish at Queen’s explore the literatures and languages of both traditions in the widest possible sense. From the earliest writings in Anglo-Saxon to contemporary Irish, British, and ‘global’ literatures, students study English in its historical, linguistic, cultural and ideological circumstances and material manifestations. Students undertaking English and Creative Writing explore literatures in English in the widest possible sense and work with some of the leading writers working in the UK and Ireland. From the earliest writings in Anglo-Saxon to contemporary Irish, British, and 'global' literatures, students study English in its historical, cultural, and material contexts.

French reflects the dynamism and cultural diversity of the French-speaking world, from metropolitan France to North Africa to the Caribbean, as well as francophone-Chinese cultures. Training in high-quality language skills is at the centre of the course. 

French at Queen’s reflects the dynamism and cultural diversity of the French-speaking world, focusing on the language, culture and society of metropolitan France, and opening up perspectives on a range of global cultures. All students spend a period of residence in a Francophone country. Students can begin their studies in French as a beginner.

The undergraduate History programme offers students a wide choice, including ancient, medieval, early modern and modern history; students can explore aspects of gender, social and cultural history, colonial history, politics, religious and economic change.

The degree includes residency (c.8 months) in a Francophone and/or Lusophone country.
