Mechanical Engineers contribute to the design and manufacture of all types products, ranging from cars to toys, mobile phones and even heating systems.

They work in research & development, manufacturing, maintenance and building services. As a student on the Mechanical Engineering course in GMIT, you will build a fundamental knowledge of engineering science including physics, electrical, chemical and materials engineering. You will learn how to design, manufacture and maintain processes and products that perform efficiently and reliably in everyday use, by focusing on three main areas: Design using 3D modelling and simulation softwares, Manufacturing technologies and the integration of CAD/CAM, Automation from process control to programming of robotic arms.

You will study a range of modules from Marine Biology research at home and abroad (e.g. Spain or Portugal) to Environmental Management and Biodiversity / Conservation. You will be studying an exciting mix of subjects including Marine Biology, studies of rivers and lakes, ecology and zoology.

Year one involves the study of a range of Science modules and year two focuses on Biology - the science of life. Biologists explore and learn how organisms are constructed and how they function. This involves the study of reproduction, growth and development and how organisms capture and use raw materials and energy. Year three covers areas such as fisheries, pollution control, the environment and aquatic biology where the main activity entails the monitoring of the aquatic environment.

Strong emphasis is placed on sustainability in agriculture and the environment. The programme consists of modules in Agriculture, Environmental Management and Agri-business.

The sustainable development of renewable resources in the face of the rapidly expanding population and developing economy is a consistent theme throughout the programme. This programme will prepare graduates for employment in the extensive pharmaceutical, biomedical and healthcare sectors in Ireland. Many opportunities also exist in the area of environmental protection, food quality and safety, the regulatory agencies and research. Students will gain a professional qualification that will enhance their prospects for career advancement to managerial position.

Medical Science is the study of investigative laboratory procedures, techniques and instruments that are required for the diagnosis of clinical disease and the monitoring of therapy. In recent years there has been an increasing demand for medical laboratory diagnostic services and for the development of new services. 

This programme combines an exciting mix of academic study and skills training in adventure sports. You will build an understanding of the developmental and educational role of outdoor education and you will study the Irish landscape, safety, communications and teaching.

In addition you will gain an extensive range of National Governing Body awards in adventure sports such as rock climbing, surfing, hill walking, sailing, snorkeling, caving and kayaking.

General nursing involves caring for people of all ages both in hospital and community care settings. This programme will give you the knowledge and skills you need to work as a general nurse both in Ireland and other countries. You will spend time in class and in our specially built clinical skills labs.

This four-year BSc (Hons) in Psychiatric Nursing offered in conjunction with HSE West and the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) has been developed in response to the changing mental health needs of the Irish population. The role of the mental health nurse is to foster the health and well-being of individuals experiencing changes in their mental health status.

People with a mental illness are cared for in many different places such as hospitals, hostels, day centres, in the community and their own homes. We want to promote positive attitudes to mental health and to help people deal with any mental/emotional challenges they face in life.

This programme focuses on the practical application of chemistry. You will be studying an exciting mixture of modules including how to make medicines and how to control the quality of those medicines. Year one involves the study of a range of Science modules, and the subject matter covered in year two of this course includes Chemistry, Analysis of materials, Computing and Microbiological analysis. The course will introduce students to the importance of quality control and quality management in the manufacturing and processing of pharmaceutical and healthcare products. 

The aim of this programme is to satisfy those who have an interest in fundamental science, to find rewarding careers in the applications of physics to measurement science and technology. Non-destructive testing is a specialisation of the course, this is the science of testing materials and systems without dismantling or damage, utilising X-rays, ultrasound, scanning electron microscopes, etc.

There is a high emphasis on practical work and projects - the student completes a number of projects over the course of the programme, and these can range from building electronic guitars, to making heart monitors, to finding new ways to use electron microscopy.

There is a large practical and project component to the programme, and students will learn skills such as project management, time management, decision making and laboratory practical skills.
