Architectural Technology refers to the technical design and expertise used in the increasingly complex design process required for contemporary architecture.

While architects are responsible for creating initial concepts and designs, architectural technologists are more concerned with the technical side of construction. Architectural technologists work closely with architects and other building professionals to resolve any potential design problems before construction starts.

An Architectural Technologist is a technical designer skilled in the application and integration of architectural and construction technologies in the building design process.

Architectural Technology is an immersive, full-time course, which will prepare you for practice and requires attendance five days a week. A studio setting provides a structured environment in which you will work alongside other students and be exposed to a variety of teaching and learning experiences.  

This course integrates technical theory with practical application to equip students with real life problem solving and communication skills and a broad understanding of construction technology and detailing, building regulations, health and safety legislation and the theory and integration of environmental and sustainable design.

It incorporates a low energy technical design project and a research project which will equip them as they set off on their career as a professional architectural technologist.

This course covers surveying, construction law and regulations, the various technologies and building materials used in construction, and CAD (computer aided drawing).

This programme is delivered through studio project work, which increases in technical complexity as the course progresses. 

Our Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Architectural Technology perfectly positions you to have a creative and exciting career in the construction industry designing innovative technical solutions for building projects from concept to completion. The aim of this programme is to produce graduates with an in-depth knowledge and a range of high-level skills and competencies necessary to succeed as an architectural technologist in the modern age - either in an architectural practice, in engineering, manufacturing and even graphic design. 

CAD technology is used to create graphics and make calculations needed in the production of drawings, three-dimensional simulations, models and other design work. The Architectural Technology and Design course (Year 1) enables students to gain a knowledge of architectural design and the built environment, while considering construction materials and the needs of clients. Students gain hands- on experience of the latest technologies in use in the architectural industry, which includes Autodesk software such as Autocad and Revit.

The BSc (Hons) Architectural Technology and Management course is based on a modular structure across two semesters and is available as a four year sandwich course (although students with the necessary industrial experience may be exempted from placement).

The course is also available in a part-time mode of study which involves students taking the course over five years (there is no placement year), and attending and completing all modules alongside the full-time students. The course leads to the degree of Bachelor of Science with Honors in Architectural Technology and Management.

The DPP (Diploma in Professional Practice) is awarded on successful completion of an approved industrial placement year.

The course is designed to equip you with a broad range of skills fundamental to becoming an architect. The BA Hons in Architecture is a studio-based, full-time course delivered over three academic years. There is an exit qualification of an Associated Bachelors (AB) after successful completion of two academic years, with a further one academic year for BA Hons completion.
