How a professional doctorate differs from a traditional doctorate
The traditional doctorate, the PDEng programme focuses on preparing candidates for an academic career and is thus focused on training people to rigorously address scientific problems which can result in a contribution to knowledge that can be published in the peer‐reviewed scientific literature.

Professional doctorates recognise the existence of research activities which can be described as professional practice. The context for this DEng programme is the practitioner workplace and the focus is on solving real‐world problems faced in the daily work‐place. The scope of these problems can be sufficiently large to be addressed in a significant piece of research planned and conducted over a period of time and which can ultimately result in a DEng award.

I A Clown 2 - LIR-IAC2
I A Clown 2 is not for the faint hearted. Be prepared to be challenged, surprised and even shocked to find what you’re capable of. In I A Clown we meet ourselves and the audience. In I A Clown 2 we work in pairs. This is a whole new game. Two clowns must now share a stage and an audience. There will be trouble, anarchy, pain, success and failure. But they are partners and like in every good relationship there’s ups and downs, but there is no end, there is only life, death and renewal. They can’t go on, they must go on, they will go on.

The Junior Academy is a tailored programme in acting for talented students aged 15– 17. Taught by leading professionals, many of whom also teach on the Foundation Diploma in Acting and Theatre and the Bachelor in Acting undergraduate courses at The Lir Academy, the Junior Academy will provide practical experience in Voice (projection, breathing techniques, dialect etc), Acting and Movement, the three cornerstones of conservatoire training and will ultimately provide a platform for further training in acting, theatre or drama. This intensive course will allow students to develop skills in acting, self confidence, improvisation, listening and taking direction. We offer adults with a passion for musical theatre an opportunity to develop the fundamental techniques required to perform in Musical Theatre. Designed for people who have never taken a dance class before, the dance instructor will teach not only the basic moves but the styling and rhythms of each dance so that at the end of the eight weeks, you will have the confidence to take to the dance floor.

Armed Stage Combat - LIR-AC
An intensive armed stage combat course in rapier and dagger techniques culminating in an exam with the Irish Dramatic Combat Academy in Armed Fighting. This armed combat course will cover all the essential rapier and dagger techniques, their safety principles, and how to perform them so they are believable to an audience. It is suitable for complete beginners and for those looking to improve their sword fighting skills for film and theatre.

Over ten weeks participants will spend the first part of the course working on mastering the techniques of the weapons, and then move on to learning the choreography for the Fight Performance test at the end of the course. The fight choreography will be incorporated into a scene in which the students will focus on “acting the fight” including the physical story-telling in fight choreography, responding to what is happening in the moment as truthfully as possible, expressing the character’s thoughts and intentions, allowing the audience to follow the story and getting involved emotionally in the action.

Stage Combat - LIR-SC
An intensive stage combat course culminating in an exam with the Irish Dramatic Combat Academy in unarmed fighting. This course is suitable for complete beginners and those actor-combatants looking to improve their unarmed fighting skills for film and theatre. Unarmed is probably the most requested skill set for fight performers and this course will cover all the essentials as well as build your strength and confidence to make you a more effective performer. We will also focus on acting skills and students will work on incorporating their fight choreography into dramatic scenes. Exploring topics such as character objective, fight rhythm and staging, actors will learn to create a fight where they are connected and truthful and as such engaging to an audience.

Technology and the Stage - LIR-TS
During this workshop we aim to offer an overview of lighting in a theatrical setting and examine the value and uses of lighting design as an important element of theatre production. By examining the aims of lighting design, as well as all the basic tools available to us, we take lighting from observation, to a ‘how to’ guide to basic lighting for theatre production. The course includes - instrument introduction, with hands on experience of rigging and focusing each lamp; use of the ETC control system to patch and create different looks (cues); choosing angles for lighting to greatest effect; looking at how to use colour; and a look at the development of a lighting design from script to stage.
