The study of Classical Civilisation is concerned with the literature, thought and culture of Ancient Greece and Rome. Through the examination and contextualisation of literary works and the analysis of the main aspects of ancient history and art, you will develop a thorough knowledge of the classical world and a critical approach to Greek and Roman literature. All texts are studied in translation and no knowledge of Greek or Latin is required, but there are opportunities to study the languages at an introductory level.

History of Art and Architecture

History of Art and Architecture is about the study of images, objects and buildings. It is unique in developing high levels of visual literacy applicable to a range of career pathways. It explores why works of art look the way they do and seeks to discover what they say about the societies that created them. It develops skills in visual analysis, critical assessment, and communication.

The study of Classical Languages is concerned with the language, literature and thought of either Ancient Greece or Ancient Rome. You will choose to study either Greek or Latin. Through the reading of literature in the original language and the examination of key aspects of ancient history, you will develop a thorough knowledge of the classical world and a critical approach to textual and material culture.

Students combine this subject with their choice of French or German.

Classics, Ancient History and Archaeology (CLAHA) is an integrated degree programme that allows you to study the history, literature, art, archaeology, culture and thought of the ancient world in conjunction with one or both of the ancient languages.

You will study Classics, Art History and Archaeology in great detail. If you are interested in understanding the visual, material and textual remains of societies from prehistory to the present, this unique interdisciplinary course is for you. You will learn to evaluate and interpret evidence and to present your ideas, while developing a greater understanding of the ancient world and of how the past has shaped the present.

The BA in Climate and Environmental Sustainability is an applied geography programme that is not just about understanding climate change and its consequences, but also about understanding how the environment itself offers solutions. If you have a keen interest in issues relating to the environment such as improving water quality and managing biodiversity, this degree is ideal for you. 

The aim of this programme is to allow students to gain the required qualification, skills and competencies to enter the healthcare work force as a Clinical Measurement Physiologist. These healthcare professionals perform diagnostics tests for patients, reporting and acting on the outcomes and being part of the interdisciplinary team treating patients. This degree was developed in collaboration with the professional body for Clinical Measurement Physiologists, the Irish Institute of Clinical Measurement Physiology.

In this course (which is unique in the country), you’ll learn how to measure and image the physiological activity of the human body and provide diagnostic information to medical staff.

As well as learning through traditional lectures, you’ll gain extensive practical experience, including placement in a hospital. It’s not necessary to have studied physics before entry.

Speech and Language Therapists work with people of all ages and assess, diagnose and treat individuals with a variety of communication and swallowing disorders.

Graduates will also have the knowledge, skills, competence and first-hand experience to design and lead strength and conditioning programmes and to design and lead performance training programmes.

The programme focuses on key theories with applied research and practical skills in these core domains to provide graduates with the relevant knowledge, skills and competences to work as professionals in a wide range of sports coaching, athletic development, and health and wellbeing settings.

The option of a comprehensive sports internship programme that provides not just breadth, but also significant depth, in the operational machinations of the ‘coaching science and sports performance’ industry in Ireland and/ or abroad, is an integral component of this programme.

Commerce is a very flexible programme that covers all business areas before a student chooses a specialism in final year in one of the following: Accounting & Performance Measurement, Human Resource Management, Marketing Management, Digital Business & Analytics, Finance, Business Law, International Business, Enterprise.

This four-year programme is designed to help students gain the theoretical and practical skills required for the employment market in business. students will have opportunities to interact with businesses and learn in real workplace scenarios and students also have the option to benefit from experiencing college life in other countries through the Study Abroad Programme. 

The Bachelor of Commerce (BComm) is a globally recognised business degree, designed for ambitious and achievement-orientated students who want to make a significant impact in the business world. Combining strong theoretical understanding with the practical skills needed for graduate employment, students are assured of a challenging and relevant programme for the modern business world.

You’ll learn to become an independent and critical thinker and a cogent and compelling communicator; with the skills to work seamlessly in groups; to develop the technical and mathematical skills to analyse and make sense of business data and intelligence.

Commerce with Gaeilge allows students to further their language skills, study in the Gaeltacht for a semester, undertake work experience and learn about all aspects of business. It is the students who want to build a career in business while also further their knowledge of the Irish language.  

All business subjects are taught through English.  In third year students will spend one semester on work placement in an Irish language medium company or organisation. In year three students will study in Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge at NUI Galway's campus in An Cheathrú Rua.

The BComm (Accounting) degree at University of Galway combines a broad-based business education with the advantage of a specialized programme for those interested in a career in accounting or a related discipline. Students on the programme particularly like the small class size, which really helps them to settle in. This programme offers significant exemptions from professional accounting examinations.

The BComm in International Hotel Management at Shannon College incorporates a full Commerce Degree with an emphasis on hospitality, tourism and the development of communication and leadership skills.
