Primary School Education

Primary school teachers work with children from four to twelve years of age in junior infants through to sixth class. It is a challenging and highly rewarding career calling for good organisation, time management and planning skills. You are responsible for preparing and delivering lessons on a wide range of subjects on the national curriculum such as Irish, English, Maths, History, Geography, Science, Arts, SPHE, PE and Religious or ethical education depending on the school ethos. As well as setting and marking homework, often outside school working hours, you will help with yard supervision, extra-curricular activities and school trips.

Excellent communications skills are vital to engage your students and liaise with work colleagues. You also need to be able to effectively connect with parents/guardians to report a student’s progress or discuss sensitive issues that may require the intervention of an educational psychologist or other professional.

As classrooms become more diverse you will be working with students with different needs, abilities and backgrounds. You will encourage and motivate your students to achieve their potential and develop a love of learning. You also have a key role in nurturing and developing their emotional and psychological well-being. By building trusting relationships with your students based on kindness, empathy and respect you can help them manage their emotions, develop resilience and reinforce positive behaviour. These are all important life skills.

If you are passionate about working with young children, a career in primary school teaching is hugely satisfying as you watch your students' grow, progress and flourish under your guidance. To qualify you require a four year Bachelor of Education in Primary Teaching or a Level 8 undergraduate degree in any discipline followed by a two year Professional Masters in Primary Education. There are also options through blended learning at PME in Primary Education - Hibernia College. Further information on entry requirements and the different routes to qualify as a primary teacher is available here and from the Teaching Council.
