The live experience of theatre incorporates many creative professions including playwrights, designers, directors, dramaturgs, drama coaches, stage managers and  costume, sound and lighting designers.

Ireland has produced many internationally acclaimed playwrights and theatre companies. There are a number of professional theatre companies in the country and the major theatres routinely host plays performed by professional actors.

Other theatre societies throughout the country operate on a volunteer basis, enlivening their local communities.
