Landscapers craft land, with a focus on how it looks. This can mean shaping the layout and appearance of the features in a park, garden or other green space (planting new flowers, bushes, trees, etc.) and then maintaining the space.

This means that landscapers must account for many factors and develop a broad set of skills. They need a horticulturist's knowledge of plant life and an artist’s eye for a pleasing visual design, but along with this they need a willingness to get their hands dirty and an ability to guide complex projects. For example, landscapers will adjust the elevation of land and expand or create bodies of water. These are changes that will need heavy machinery and often multiple employees.

Some designers and architects work within a professional landscape firm or at a garden centre while others work for themselves. 

Landscape supervisors are responsible for managing all field operations. They coordinate the use of resources such as labour, equipment and materials to ensure maximum use and completion of work within budget, safety guidelines and quality standards.
