Film

In recent years Ireland has been described as a “capital of filmmaking” due to government tax incentives and a pool of creative talent. Irish film has won a plethora of international awards.

The process of making a film, from an initial story idea or commission through scriptwriting, shooting, editing and finally distribution to an audience typically involves a large number of people in diverse occupations and can take anywhere between a few months and several years to complete.

There are a huge variety of jobs required just to bring one production to cinema screens and depending on the type of film job opportunities may differ but will include; screenwriter, director, casting director, producer; cinematographer, camera operatives, sound engineers, lighting technicians, actors, stuntmen, researchers, location managers, animators, make up artists, hair stylists and more.

Despite the competitive nature of the industry jobs are forecast to double in the coming years including the need for increased numbers of live action production crew. New studio infrastructure projects are planned and five National Talent Academies are to be established throughout Ireland to fill the skills gap, including one in animation. This along with other initiatives by Screen Ireland will increase opportunities for those interested in this sector to train and develop skills in Film and TV drama, animation and production. In the early stages of your career it is important to get as much work experience as possible and establish connections in the industry.

The nature of the work requires flexibility, with irregular long working hours and the requirement to travel, sometimes overseas, depending on the film’s location. Nevertheless it can be very rewarding to be part of a large film production and see your name in the credits.
