The law enforcement body in Ireland is An Garda Síochána. There are over 13,000 Gardaí in the state who are responsible for enforcing the law.

As a Garda you will face a demanding career, and the attributes selected for are very important to your day to day work. You will need to call on an understanding of team-work, excellent communication skills, a mind for problem-solving and the ability to resolve conflicts.

Selection for Garda recruitment involves an aptitude test followed by an interview stage. You will be tested for competency in the areas of planning and preparation, community orientation, achieving high standards, decision making, persuading others and taking charge. You need to be aged between 18 and 34 to be eligible to apply to the Garda Siochána. Everyone must be in good mental and physical health..

Training comprises a total of three years based in Templemore which includes study (2-year BA in Applied Policing D-157) and supervised practical work at selected Garda stations. The college also has a BA in Police Management for superintendent rank upwards.

Over the course of your career you may develop an interest in one of the specialist units that support the Gardaí in their work. Examples include the air support, water, ballistics, fraud investigation, the Criminal Assets Bureau and the Garda National Immigration Bureau.
