Animal Conservation

There are several organisations and bodies in Ireland devoted to promoting and working on Animal Conservation. These include non-profit organisations such as the Irish Wildlife Trust and government organisations like the National Parks & Wildlife Service. Most of the non-government organisations are volunteer based, with paid careers available in government agencies. Work involves maintaining conservation areas and wildlife parks and looking out for endangered species.

Government and private agencies are in constant need of workers that have an understanding of how wildlife populations are managed, and the ways in which various management strategies affect the overall health of an ecosystem.

Wildlife centres usually offer educational programs to the local community and care for a collection of animals who survived injuries that rendered them unfit to be returned into the wild. In contrast to wildlife rescue operations, sanctuaries are centres where wild animals, who may have been rescued by the sanctuary for a variety of reasons, are kept and cared for until their end of life or until a spot opens up at a zoo.

Wildlife Parks and Zoo’s, prominent examples include; Dublin Zoo, Fota Wildlife Park, Wild Ireland, and Seal Rescue Ireland, work to conserve animals. They do this by participating in the conservation, research and breeding of the often-endangered animals under their care.

Some of the career options available in amimal conservation include; zookeeper, vet, ecologist, conservation scientist, biologist and marine scientist.
