Sustainable Energy

You might be interested in being part of the new renewable energy revolution such as wind power which is experiencing huge growth. Sustainable Energy is any approach to generating energy that meets the demands of the present while ensuring that future generations will have the resources available to meet their energy needs. This encompasses a range of approaches, but one constant is it does not involve any energy derived from fossil fuels, as by their very nature these sources are finite, even if we reduce the rate at which we use them they will someday run out and be unavailable to future generations.

Instead sustainable sources are those that are renewable, exploiting the natural world in the form of sun, water or wind to generate power. Managed correctly, these energy sources provide an endless supply. Utilising them to their maximum potential means shifting more and more of our power supply away from fossil fuels and towards renewable sources. This extends to the rise in electric cars, but they are an example of how sustainable energy needs advances everywhere to be successful. Electric cars do not offer much gain in sustainability terms if the power grid they are charged from is based on fossil fuels, to be most effective the power grid at large needs to be shifted towards renewable sources.

Careers in Sustainable Energy include ones directly involved in the manufacturing and management of renewable energy sources, such as engineers and technicians constructing windmills and maintaining wind farms and those indirectly related, for example installing charging stations for electric cars or designing houses to be energy neutral to minimise their energy use.

The range of roles may surprise you. You can scale the heights as a wind turbine technician or conduct an aerial wildlife survey around wind farms as an ecologist. Or you might relish designing state of the art projects delivering green energy to over one million customers as an offshore manager. Other roles include solving problems using data analytics, environmental advisor, planning, legal and community liaison People in Wind.

Harnessing the energy from wind, water and the sun makes us less reliant on fossil fuels ensuring a sustainable future not only for humans but also for the plants and animals with whom we share this earth.
