Community Work

Are you someone motivated by people rather than money? Community work could be broadly defined as work that isn’t primarily about making money and instead is about helping the people around you.

This makes for a varied sector, encompassing many different types of organisation. It could include small groups based in one area and working to support people with particular needs, right up to national and international bodies such as the GAA or international aid organisations.

Even the largest organisations concentrate much of their activities on local communities. The bedrock of the GAA is local clubs, and people will hold events raising money for international aid agencies right across the nation.

The focus of the most valuable community work is on those who are most marginalised, the goal is to empower people of all backgrounds, ages and ability to achieve their full potential. Those working in the community are often driven by strong ideals, a belief in people's potential, a sense of justice and a desire to help the disadvantaged. The sector may not pay extremely well and demands commitment, empathy and an ability to get things done.
