Advocacy

Advocacy is having your voice heard. People in society have many different perspectives on issues, and in an open society they can make these perspectives heard through advocating for their views on policies, elections or business practices.

Organisations will often focus on advocating for particular causes, for example the Irish Council for Civil Liberties promotes peoples rights and liberties, the Immigrant Council of Ireland supports the interests of recent immigrants to Ireland. Advocacy, whether by individuals or organisations, is a vital part of a functioning democracy. Advocacy approaches can range from drafting research papers, organising protests or holding education events.

Effective advocacy is a product of strategy, good organisation and patient execution. Convincing people takes time. This means there’s more to a career in the area than communications skills. A talent with research, social media, marketing, management or fundraising can all help you establish yourself in the sector.

Most advocacy isn’t performed by professionals. At their best, advocacy movements are sustained by volunteers at every level.
