What were the main 'career decision' milestones in your life so far?

Ian McKinley, Rugby Player

Biggest career decision was moving to Italy. I had a no previous knowledge of the language but by simply immersing myself in the culture, I was able to pick it up after a year.

Who are the people who most influenced your career direction?

Ian McKinley, Rugby Player

The move to Italy was helped by Leinster Rugby and I have to largely thank my brother Philip for where I am today in terms of being a professional rugby player.

How did you go about getting your current job?

I went straight from school into the professional rugby system so it was merely based on how you were performing and what potential you could have in the future.

Describe a typical day?

I am usually in to train at 8 in the morning until 4 or 5 in the afternoon. The day is usually consisted of meetings, gym and field sessions.

What are the main tasks and responsibilities?

My main contribution is that I have to perform on the field to the best of my ability week in week out.

What are the main challenges?

Travelling week in week out and spending time away from the family can at times be difficult.

I studied Biology, French, Classical Studies, Geography, Irish, Maths, English. If I am to be honest none of them have influenced my career path.

Completed the Leaving Certificate and have received a certificate in Sports Psychology.

What aspects of your education have proven most important for your job?

School helped me with public speaking and this has helped me to communicate with others.

Biggest honour has been representing Italy at international level.

I get to travel a lot which is fantastic and also my days are not always structed the same which I like.

It needs to be something that you really love to do. When you have to train during winter it can be difficult so you have to be mentally strong.
